European Court of Human Rights
Hamzayan v. Armenia, no. 43082/14, 6 February 2024
“Freedom to manifest one’s religion includes in principle the right to express one’s religious views by imparting them to others and the right ‘to try to convince one’s neighbour’, for example through ‘teaching’, failing which ‘freedom to change [one’s] religion or belief’ … would be likely to remain a dead letter. The act of imparting information about a particular set of beliefs to others who do not hold those beliefs – known as missionary work or evangelism in Christianity – is protected [by the right to freedom of religion] alongside other acts of worship, such as the collective study and discussion of religious texts”
